Ornate [Rock] Lizard

Description

An Ornate Tree Lizard (Urosaurus ornatus) defies its namesake habitat and chooses to warm up on a rock rather than a tree.  It was a pretty chilly rainy day, so I was able to sneak up nice and close for a photo.  These guys are remarkably variable in coloration and color pattern, ranging from jet black to warm brown, both with or without marking.  The bellies of males are entirely brilliant blue, but that's a tricky thing to photograph.

Photo taken near Flagstaff, AZ.

Lovely lizard, fine shot!  It amazes me how these New World lizards are almost, but not quite, like the ones we have in Africa.  This looks very much like the Agama lizards we have here.  Those are often cryptically coloured like this ... but some species have brightly coloured males, especially in the breeding season.  Mostly they get blue heads.  Then it also remings me of our flat lizards ... they're green or brown above, but have wonderfully intense blue and green and other colours on their throats and bellies, which they show up by lifting their heads and doing 'push-ups'.
