Texas Spiny Lizard by ZoPteryx Texas Spiny Lizard by ZoPteryx
A nice large Texas Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus olivaceus) poses on boardwalk for it close-up.  These guys are pretty common through most of Texas and can often be found clinging to tree trunks with their face pointed downwards.  I noticed that the inland individuals I saw had more blackish markings on their throats and flanks compared to coastal individuals (shown here).

Photo taken at Laguna Atascosa NWR in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

Fantastic! What lizard group are they a member of? Some sort of dragon?

They are members of phrynosomatidae, along with the horned lizards ("horny toads"), earless lizards, and fence lizards.
